Message from Vice-Headmaster

Thank you very much for visiting our school’s website.
Recently, many people may think that Ikebana is hard to learn or that they need an appropriate place in a house to display Ikebana. However, I believe you are visiting here today with a specific interest in Ikebana.
Our school can teach you diverse types of Ikebana based on our tradition, including small and casual ones using daily and decorative goods around you at home and artificial and preserved flowers that can be enjoyed even in hot summertime.
Let’s start learning Ikebana today!

Risui Sugita Vice Headmaster of Katsura-Koryu/Katsura-Ryu

Brief History of Katsu-Koryu/Katsura-Ryu

“Katsura-Koryu” was established in 1882 by Youshinsai-Hakuryu, the flower art master of the Katsura-Rikyu (Katsura Imperial Villa.)

The third headmaster, Kaso Ike, originally developed “Nageire (throw-in-vase style Ikebana) and “Moribana (modern style Ikebana)” in 1914 and integrated them into a new school “Katsura-Ryu.” Since then, the headmasters of our school have inherited the tradition and managed both Katsura-Koryu and Katsura-Ryu.

In 1950, 6th headmaster Kasui Sugita originated a new style of Ikebana called “Shin-Soka (new style Ikebana)” and presented it at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in the same March. Shin-soka, which uses various materials such as metals, glasses, clothes, and papers in combination with flowers, generated a fresh and unique combination of tones, colors, and lights, and received a favorable review.

Since then, the headmasters of our school have managed three types of Ikebana: Katsura-Koryu “Kakubana (traditional style Ikebana),” Katsura-Ryu Nageire/Moribana (throw-in-vase style Ikebana/modern style Ikebana),” and “Shin-soka (new style Ikebana).”

Koh Sugita, the current 7th headmaster who has a unique career as a movie actor, has actively created many traditional flower works as well as contemporary ones, and shown his works in various places and exhibitions, including those held by the Japan Ikebana Art Association.

Risui Sugita, who has international working experience, recently established the “Creative Flower,” a small and charming flower arrangement that fits today’s busy and compact lifestyle and global expansion of Ikebana. She has made efforts to disseminate it.
